SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) is often criticized for encouraging safe, easily reachable goals instead of ambitious ones. But the problem is usually less about the method itself, and more about how it’s applied.
Where SMART still works well
For clearly defined, short-term goals — a monthly sales target, the outcome of a specific campaign — the SMART structure helps avoid ambiguity.
Where it falls short
For a long-term, transformational direction (e.g., “become the market leader”), the SMART frame is too narrow — a broader direction, supplemented with short-term SMART steps toward it, works better here.
