A task with no clear owner is a task “someone” will do — which usually means no one does it.
This phenomenon is known in psychology as diffusion of responsibility — when a task is assigned to “the team” or several people at once, each person naturally assumes someone else will handle it. The result: the work stays untouched until someone finally notices, often close to the deadline.
Why a single owner works better
- It’s clear who to ask when a question comes up about a specific task
- Responsibility no longer diffuses across several people, none of whom feel truly accountable
- It’s easier for a manager to gauge workload, since it’s visible how many tasks are assigned to each person individually
This doesn’t mean several people can’t work on a task — it just means one of them has to be the person you go to when you need an answer.
