
A pretty dashboard full of charts creates the illusion that everything’s clear at a glance. In reality, some charts can mislead if you don’t understand exactly what they’re calculating.
Three common reading traps
- Absolute numbers without context — “100 new contacts” means nothing without knowing whether that’s more or less than usual
- Averages that hide extremes — a few very large deals can skew “average deal value”
- Correlations mistaken for causation — two things rising together doesn’t mean one causes the other
Before making a decision based on a dashboard, it’s worth asking one question: does this number show a trend, or just a one-off moment. The answer often changes what you actually need to do next.
